Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime. Do you remember once thinking that this slogan was something to do with progressive politics and that it would make a positive difference to this country? To my shame, I once thought that. Now, of course, it's obvious that it was an empty election slogan with approximately no principles or actions attached. Respect? Don't make us laugh Tony.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was a happy laugh but it's not. It's a bitter, incredulous, outraged laugh. Respect?

Been busy for much of the day so I've not had time to fully explain my objection to this mendacious and obstreperous turd polishing exercise. The only practical measures in this appear to be an extension of summary powers:
Mr Blair accepted that on-the-spot fines for some offences reversed the principle that people were innocent until proven guilty but said in reality such summary powers were needed.Ten years ago, I'd have read that and immediately looked for the punchline. It's satire, right? Apparently not. Anyway, regarding a proper explanation, here's a good one and it's done with some style:
