Some quick links on Ernesto Leal's situation.

The Independent: Is a refugee from Pinochet the victim of a witch-hunt?

The Herald: 'My brother has been turned into a scapegoat'
Charles Clarke, the home secretary, is to be pressed over the case of a Chilean refugee who has been threatened with deportation more than a year after he was released from prison for a violent pub attack.

Diane Abbott, the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, is to question Mr Clarke about Ernesto Leal following the 41-year-old's arrest this week 15 months after serving a prison sentence for grievous bodily harm with intent
Clarke has now been removed from that post, of course. At least Diane seems intent on asking the right questions.

BBC News: Cases caught in deportation row
The 41-year-old was re-arrested on Monday as part of a government crackdown on freed foreign criminals. Much to the family's surprise, the Home Office papers announced Leal would be deported to Jamaica - a country he claims to have no connection with. The department later admitted to an "administrative error" and Leal is now in jail awaiting deportation to Chile.
An "administrative error"? Good grief.

They still seem to be saying they intend to deport him though, some 29 years after he first arrived in the UK. It would surely be a travesty of justice if Mr Leal was to be sent back to Chile, a country he has not lived in since he was 13 years old.

Updates on this case, and hopefully news that common sense has prevailed, to follow as and when.
